Magalí D. Varela is a photographer, screenwriter and audiovisual director. She was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she studied Social Communication and Creative Advertising at “UCES University”, with an exchange year at “ESC Rennes School of Business” in France. She graduated with honors for her final degree project. She worked for more than eight years as a journalist and copywriter in Buenos Aires. In 2014 she moved to Spain, where she studied visual arts and artistic photography at “Escuela Arte 10” in Madrid, and later relocated to Barcelona, where she still resides. In 2019, she was selected to participate in the intensive “Visual Storytelling” course at the “International Center of Photography (ICP) New York” in Turin, Italy, (in collaboration with “CAMERA” Torino) where she developed her first documentary short film, “ALPHA”. The project was later selected for the Documentary Film Creation Lab at the “Francesca Bonnemaison Institution (“La Bonne”)” in Barcelona. There, the film evolved into a feature-length project and was selected for “CIMA Impulsa” 2021/2022, where it received editing and post-production investment from Elamedia Studios in Madrid. She directed three documentary short films in Buenos Aires that are currently in post production: “Un Nombre” “JESUS, the theme park” and
“Parque Aero”. Her documentary photography series “Concrete Jungle” was shown at festivals such as “Manifesto” in Toulouse. In 2024, she was awarded the “ECAM Talento” scholarship, by “Escuela de Cinematografía y del Audiovisual de la Comunidad de Madrid (ECAM)” which enabled her to pursue a Master’s degree in Fiction Screenwriting (2024-2025).
